Cherry Hills Village Schools

November 27, 2017 By Larry Hotz, Kentwood Real Estate Leave a Comment

Cherry Hills Village schools are among the best schools in the State of Colorado. They pretty much must conform to the luxury real estate in Cherry Hills. In addition, the private schools in and around Cherry Hills are also among the best available.

Cherry Hills Village itself is the most affluent Denver suburb. Its residents are well-educated and comprised of Denver’s movers and shakers. In some ways, Cherry Hills residents expect their children to be very well-educated. And, unlike some areas in the country, children in Cherry Hills can attend the public schools and get a top-notch education.

Cherry Creek High School

Cherry Creek Test Scores

2017 Cherry Creek High School Test scores.

Cherry Hills Village Schools include the The Cherry Creek School District. It is one of the top rated school districts in the state of Colorado. And, The Cherry Creek High School is among the most popular high school in the district. It’s huge campus is more like a small college.

It was the original high school in this district. Now, there are a total of seven high schools in the Cherry Creek School District. And, although the facility is older, renovations and upgrades have kept up with the times.

The Cherry Creek High School is superior. The Cherry Creek High School is one of the largest high schools in the state of Colorado. The 80 acre campus has several freestanding buildings as well is the main classroom facility. Almost 3800 students attend classes here on a traditional school year calendar. In addition to Spring Break, is students also enjoy a one-week vacation in the fall.

Because the campus is so large, many opportunities abound that cannot be found at other high schools. Both of my daughters graduated from the Cherry Creek High School. When my daughter, Elizabeth, attended school there, she was Capt. of the debate team which competed around the state. She took Advanced European Art and Literature as one of many advanced placement classes. There were only nine students in the class.

5A sport programs, theater, service clubs, intramurals, afterschool programs provide some of the many unique opportunities at The Cherry Creek High School.

West Middle School

West Middle School

West Middle School serves Cherry Hills Village students and is located just across the street in Greenwood Village.

Cherry Hills Village Schools also includes West Middle School. West is also a large school with about 1200 students on average. The school is highly ranked

Ethnic Diversity

Ethic diversity is modest at West Middle School.

academically. But, some of the online reviews come from critical parents. The major objection is that the school does not protect children from bullying. These complaints go back as far as 2012. Since then, the school has established a hotline for parents and students to call to complain about bullying incidents which are then investigated.

West test scores

West Middle School has strong test scores.

My children also attended West Middle School. There were also some social challenges but nothing approaching bullying. From my perspective, that comes with the age and stage more than from a school environment. But the high expectations of the parents did lead to some criticisms then.

Even positive online reviews from parents can’t quite give a full five star rating. This 4 Star review is an example: “Quite possibly the best public middle school in Colorado. Supportive, engaging teachers who truly care about the students and a great preparatory system for the high school. Tons of extracurriculars…”

The school does offer some high school classes. For example, about 20% of the students take algebra. The proficiency rate is far above the state average for that subject.

Cherry Hills Village Elementary School

Both of my daughters also attended Cherry Hills Village Elementary school. They still have fond memories of some of the teachers there.

Cherry Hills Village Elementary School

Cherry Hills Village Elementary School is home of “The Dolphins”.

Of course, the academics are very highly rated. Some of the online rating services mark the school down for its lack of diversity. It’s true, the students at the school generally can come from privileged, Caucasian families. But, our experience there was that the diversity is valued. Children from different backgrounds and races fit right in with everybody else.

The biggest positive of the school is the parental involvement. Often, a parent or two is in the classroom with the teacher. Sometimes, parents make presentations about subjects in the classroom. For example, I helped explain the math of real estate to a fifth-grade class. I showed them how to calculate square footage in a space. The homework assignment was to measure the square footage in each of their rooms at home and report back the next day.

Cherry Hills Village Schools Are Top Notch

When my family moved to Cherry Hills in 1983, schools was a major consideration. We wanted our children to have excellent schools. And, that worked out fine. Generally, I think my daughters will agree that they received an excellent public education in the public Cherry Hills Village schools.

All of these public schools have been recognized by the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program. And, my clients have all been happy with the public schools here. Still, some folks choose to send their children to private schools for various reasons.

Private Cherry Hills Village Schools

Kent Denver

Cherry Hills Village schools include Kent DenverI know, it’s a funny name. Kent Denver is actually located in Cherry Hills Village. It used to be called Kent country Day school. And, it serves students from 7th to 12th grade. Classes are smaller. Off-campus learning is also offered. And, the campus itself is expansive with 800 aces nestled in the heart of Cherry Hills and surrounded by large homes.

Kent Denver facts

Kent Denver track and Field

The track and field at Kent Denver overlooks the Colorado Rocky Mountains from a rural Cherry Hills setting.

Kent Denver was originally founded in 1922 is an all girls school. However, it has been open to boys and girls since 1974.

Kent Denver can be expensive. Average costs including tuitions and fees can exceed $20,000 per student per year. However, can’t Denver has made a conscious effort to expand its diversity. It offers some form of financial aid to one in four of its students.

Standards for admission are fairly high. It seems that some years that only top students can expect to be admitted. It really depends on the demand for classes in any one year.

St. Mary’s Academy in Cherry Hills

St. Mary’s Catholic School does not require religious classes. As a result, students from all religions and backgrounds are attracted to the fine academics and education this school can offer.

Cherry Hills Village SchoolAlthough it was founded by the Sisters of Loretto in 1864, today it operates as an independent Catholic school. It offers classes from prekindergarten through high school. Only girls can attend the high school. But lower grades are coeducational.

You may have already seen the campus and not even realized it. St. Mary’s Academy was featured in the Rodney Dangerfield movie called Ladybugs. The picturesque athletic field with the back drop of the Colorado Rocky Mountains is stunning.

Again, classes are smaller and offer more personal attention. Admission standards are not exceptionally strict. And, the annual tuition is generally less than similar secular private schools.
