One of the more desirable features of living in Colorado is the expansive trail system throughout the state. In Denver, there are several trails that link up all quadrants of the city. They run over 110 miles. You can ride from the Chatfield Reservoir to Downtown, riding along the Platte River, without crossing a street. I have a client who does that on a regular basis. His legs must be like rocks.
The northern suburbs have a lot of mountain trails around Boulder. Also, there is a proposed inter-city trail that we are eagerly awaiting. It will eventually link Lafayette, Louisville, Superior, Erie, Boulder, Niwot, Longmont and Lyons. In 2009, the county master plan will be created and construction will begin linking a trail that will branch off of the Boulder Reservoir and head norwest along a canal to Lyons. Another trail will branch off to Gunbarrel, Niwot and Longmont. The trails will not be finished until 2015. They are being scenically placed along creeks, rivers and through county open spaces.
All of these towns are historically charming and unique. It is a terrific way to spend the day. Boulder is one of the top destination cities for world class cyclists and it is not unusual to see a team riding the back roads training for the Tour de France. Boulder itself encourages cyclists with numerous bike racks and bicycle lanes.
There are only two indoor velodromes in the country. One of them, Boulder Indoor Cycling, just opened its doors to much enthusiasm. Do you remember the Celestial Seasonings bike race that used to held in Boulder? We are a biking town.
Last summer, during the Democratic Convention, there were bike libraries. You were lent a bike for several hours to encourge less auto traffic. This is popular in Europe and I think you will see more of it around here.
So, if you are planning a visit to our area, consider takiing a bike tour. Check out all the trail information at www.bouldercounty.org/transportation/trails

I have family in CO and concur–it is truly beautiful. The trails highlight that fact. We went hiking and horseback riding and I enjoyed it immensely!
They lived in the Conifer/Evergreen area but now live in Grand Junction. I haven’t been to their new home but would LOVE to re-visit CO one day.
Getting out into nature is such a nice thing to have the opportunity to do, especially if you have kids. You actually get the chance to teach them to appreciate what nature has given us. I am sure the trails and such are wonderful there in CO.
And, they keep acquiring more land and adding to the trails. It is fantastic. I walked the South Boulder Creek Trail recently with my husband and dog, Reilly. It was gorgeous – and flat. Next to pastureland and a view of the Flatirons.
