Few Cherry Hills Building Lots Remain in Buell Mansion

When I was growing up in Cherry Hills Village, the exclusive gates of the coveted Buell Mansion neighborhood didn’t yet exist. Up until the early 2000s, it was a vast lot of golden grasses just across Hampden Blvd from Wellshire Golf Course. And, you could throw a stone just over the road to Cherry Hills Village Country Club.

If you looked closely towards the back of the 192 acres, you could see large trees shading the original 1920’s mansion estate, including horse stables and a large lake. Owned from 1930 to 1990 by Temple Hoyne Buell, a locally renowned architect and philanthropist who designed over 300 buildings around the Denver-metro area. He was somewhat of hermit living a reclusive life on his Cherry Hills Village estate. Some even called him “Denver’s Howard Hughes”.

The reclusive Mr. Buell even built the city’s first mall, the Cherry Creek Mall on a controversial strip of land where the fashion mall sits today.Only Today, the residential area surround the new Cherry Creek Fashion Mall is some of the most expensive real estate in Denver.

Developers Fought Cherry Hills Village For Years

Buell Mansion is a gated community with private roads and custom homes in the exclusive Denver suburb, Cherry Hills Village.

Upon Buell’s death in 1990, many developers tried to build condo and townhome projects. Once, the developers proposed even a high-end hotel. Fortunately, Cherry Hills Village was able to prevail though court battles. As a result,the site is now home to just over 100 private home-sites guarded by two, 24-hour security gates.

Residents of Buell Mansion enjoy the amenities of the historical mansion. Those can use as a venue for social gatherings, and Buell Lake. There is also a community pool, tennis courts, and access to trails that connect with the Highline Canal. From Mountain Contemporary to French Country, I love that the custom beauties in this desirable and exclusive neighborhood. They reflect  a variety of many different architecture styles. That’s a nod to their former patron, the escentric and reclusive Mr. Buell who established one of the largest architectural firms in the Rocky Mountain region.
