I am a proud Aurora Resident and love living here. The city of Aurora is a very large place. It’s 154.1 square miles in area and the third largest city in Colorado. So, when someone says they live in Aurora, they’re being quite general. Southeast Aurora, defined by the Cherry Creek School district line that squiggles through the south section of Aurora, seems to be growing like a weed . There are plenty of reasons why!
As Aurora expands east with the developments around The Southlands shopping area and more new builds than one can keep up with, Southeast Aurora has become an affordable and exciting place to live. No longer do those of us who live here feel that were “home on the range.” With a plethora of shopping centers, restaurants, movie theaters, parks and reservoirs, there’s nothing this city can’t offer. Have you ever imagined a “less than 30 minute drive” to DIA? How about having plenty of activities?
Aurora has had a bad rap in the past as a result of high crime rates, poor schools, run-down areas in the northern sections of Aurora. In the past 10 years, Southeast Aurora has overcome that undeserved reputation it earned from its naughty step child, Northern Aurora.
There’s now the ever-growing RTD Light Rail stop on Parker Road and I-225 for easy access to downtown. In 2016, the new R line will run along the entire stretch of I-225! Also, all of the Southeast Aurora neighborhoods feed into the award-winning Cherry Creek School District. The City of Aurora is repaving and widening many neighborhood streets. In addition, crime rates in Aurora overall have been dropping over the past three years.
Personally, I chose to buy my first home Southeast Aurora in the neighborhood of High Point, located near Tower Road and Hampden Avenue. I have two grocery stores within 1/4 mile of my house, two reservoirs, many beautiful, maintained parks and greenbelts within walking distance. I am 20 minutes from DIA and 11 minutes from the Denver Tech Center. There are plenty of wonderful neighbors and friends nearby.
If you were to pick up my house, land and neighborhood and relocate it to Greenwood Village, we would have literally paid four times the amount we did in February 2013. I can conveniently go shopping at the luxurious Southlands Lifestyle Center (The Mall) or spend the day paddle boarding and swimming at beautiful Aurora Reservoir, a short 12 minute drive from my door.
Love beer? Dry Dock Brewing Company is open seven days a week until 9 pm or later! And although it’s just my husband and me right now, if we were to have kids, they would go to Cherry Creek Schools, including Belleview Elementary and Horizon Middle school; both received a 10 out of 10 GreatSchools.org ratings!
Southlands Lifestyle Center, or as the locals call it “Southlands Mall,” is located just east of C-470 and south of Smoky Hill Road. It’s the largest non-enclosed mall in the country! From oodles of retails stores and yummy restaurants to a huge Wal-Mart, Lowe’s and comfy dine-in movie theater, there’s something for everyone. There’s no need to fight traffic and try to get to Park Meadows or Cherry Creek, when you have just as many options less than fifteen minutes away from your doorstep.
Who says Colorado doesn’t have beaches? With Aurora Reservoir and Cherry Creek Reservoir, you can put our 300+ days of sunshine to good use. You can sail, kayak, swim, paddle board, or just have a picnic on the beach with your family. Cherry Creek State Park, home to the 880 acre Cherry Creek Reservoir, is also home to plentiful bike trails and a 100 acre off-leash dog park!
Southeast Aurora is a really neat place to live, and the word is getting out! This area is growing at a crazy rate. Our home has increased 29% in value since we purchased it in February 2013. If you want to take the plunge and be part of the newest, upcoming area and live the life of luxury for a fraction of the Cherry Hills cost, you’d be silly not to look into buying in Southeast Aurora. It won’t stay affordable for long, so don’t miss this opportunity to be a pioneer of the next best area to live!
