The City of Parker was incorporated in 1981. This unique area was first recognized as the equestrian capital of Colorado. Parker is located just southeast of downtown Denver in Douglas County and has excellent access to I-25, E-470 and the Denver Tech Center. Parker is particularly known for it’s charming, Western/Victorian-style downtown area. It is also a city that is “on the move” and expanding with new subdivisions, shopping centers and recreation areas.
Ever since the Parker Recreation Department was developed in 1992, Parker has been busy keeping their residents active. Although there are still many equestrian centers in the area, the Parker Recreation Center prides itself on keeping up with the trends by providing its members with state-of-the-art workout facilities, pool, hockey rink, skateboard park, sports teams, workout classes, etc. In fact, over the past 5 years, Parker Recreation has donated over $15.8 million dollars to the building and maintaining of new parks, outdoor trails and recreational facilities throughout the area. Today the town boasts over 200 acres of parkland, 700 acres of open space and 8 golf courses.
As far as art and entertainment venues are concerned, Parker is just the place. The town has everything from quaint restaurants, art galeries to movies theaters, factory outlet stores and shopping malls nearby. The Parker Art Commission is a year-round organization dedicated to putting together festivals, performances, parades and other community activities. In fact, they have just started working on a project to build a culture center and new library in the heart of downtown Parker.
The city of Parker is served by the Douglas County School District. With more than sixty schools in Douglas County, this growing and dynamic district is the fourth largest district in the state. Douglas County prides itself on manifesting a positive environment where trust, hard work and quality processes are hallmarks of every school. The district is also renown for providing their faculty with continuous education and training. In fact, according to a report released in 2005, The Labor Day List: Partnerships That Work, Douglas County School District is one of the top nine places to work in the country.
