The beginnings of Littleton can be traced to the "Pikes Peak" gold rush era. As the metropolis of Denver began to grow, the need arose to construct a series of ditches for the transportation of water to the city. Among the engineers hired to lay out this system was young Richard Sullivan Little of New Hampshire. Little just fell in love with the area and, as they say, the rest is history…

Littleton became an official city in 1890 with a mere population of 245 residents. Today this thriving and appealing community just to the southwest of Metro-Denver has grown to over 40,600 residents.

The city of Littleton became widely known in 1999 when the Columbine High School Massacre occurred at nearby Columbine High School Massacre. However, the school is located in unincorporated Jefferson County and is really not in Littleton, but has a Littleton zip code. In fact, other areas located in unincorporated Jefferson County include Deer Vally, Ken Caryl Valley In Littleton, ColoradoKen Caryl, Columbine Country Club and Four Lakes.

The City of Littleton encompasses the comforts of a quaint historic town and a big, vivacious suburb in one. Historic Downtown Littleton looks like a small village with its charming boutiques and restaurants.The area is very proud to be the home of Hudson Gardens,a non-profit botanical garden located along the bank of the South Platte River where residents enjoy outdoor events, live concerts and gardens of plant native to the dry Colorado climate. For recreational activities, nothing beats Littleton’s new multi-generation $11 million, 54,000 square-foot Douglas H. Buck Community Recreation Center. This center offers an aquatics area with therapy pool, lap lanes, a "lazy river" for resistance walking or tube floating and a leisure pool, a gymnasium with running and walking tracks, fitness area, basketball courts, babysitting room, multi purpose room. Littleton has already been connected to Denver’s new Light Rail System, our newest mass-transit system  that provides easy access to the sporting events, entertainment and shopping in Dennis Martin.

Cherry Creek School District and Littleton Public Schools are the two school districts that not only serve this community, but also offer some of the best public education in the Denver Metro Area. Cherry Creek School District, viewed by some as the best public education in the state, has traditionally been recognized for their excellent K-12 educational services. Cherry Creek High School boasts some of the highest test scores in the state every year and sends over 93% of its graduates to college. In 2004, five schools in the Littleton Public School district received the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award.Two schools within the system were included in Newsweek magazines list of the best schools in America. Student ACT and SAT scores within both school systems rank well above the Colorado or National averages.
