Only 15 minutes away from Denver, Golden is located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains at the mouth of the Clear Creek Canyon.This area was first inhabited by Indians and later by miners during the Gold Rush of 1859. Today Golden has a population of over 17,000 residents and climbing. Golden has a rich history that has helped shape this once small town into a desirable, thriving community. However, Golden has not forgotten it’s past as many of it’s historical buildings still remain today.

Golden is home to the prestigious Colorado School of Mines, founded in 1870. The Colorado School of Mines has the highest admission standards compared to any other college in the state and, furthermore, it is among the top higher-education institutions in the country.This public university is renown for it’s engineering and applied science programs. CSM students make up about 20% of Golden’s population.

The Clear Creek river runs through the town, providing not only outdoor recreation, but it is an excellent resource for generating electricity, milling, manufacturing and smelting. One enterprise who decided to take long-term advantage of this natural resource and beautiful location is the Coors Brewery, the largest single-source brewery on the planet.The brewery provides jobs for many of the area’s residents and has generously contributed to the overall wealth of Golden. Finding entertainment in Golden is easy. The town boasts 10 museums, world-class hiking and biking trails, five-star restaurants and cute cafes, not to mention great shopping that ranges from Golden’s historic downtown to the new Colorado Mills Mall, an outlet mall that features all the up-scale retail stores and manufacturers.

The City of Golden is served by Jefferson County Public Schools. This school district has over 97,000 students making it one of the larger districts in the state. Since it is so large, this district is able to provide its students with a variety of educational programs to meet their individual needs. The average district teacher has 12 years of experience and the student/teacher ratio is 17:1. In 20005, the high school’s graduating classes earned $75.7 million in college scholarships.
