The city is governed in what is known mayor-council style, which limits the city’s tax levying and collection powers. It was created with the attractive idea of keeping city taxes at only 1%. This city is located in the southern Denver Metropolitan area, entirely within Arapahoe County boundaries. Centennial is adjacent to the cities and towns of Aurora, Englewood, Greenwood Village, Highlands Ranch, Littleton, Lone Tree, and Parker. This brand new city has the fourth largest population in the Denver-Metro Area. However, many people are unfamiliar with the name Centennial, and often refer to this area with the names of the neighboring cities, such as Littleton or Englewood. Centennial encompasses roughly 28 square miles and 103,000 residents. Residents seek this community because of its close proximity to downtown Denver, short commute to area business parks and access to excellent schools.

Like many of the surrounding areas, Centennial offers it’s community a plentitude of both indoor and outdoor activities. The city is served by Arapahoe County Recreational District, South Suburban Parks and Recreation and Arapahoe Parks and Recreation which provides endless opportunities for sports leagues, recreation centers, extensive network of trails and, of course, a variety of exceptional golf courses. Cherry Creek Lake State Park is quite popular for recreational fishing, picnicking, swimming and water sports.

Southglenn Mall, once one of Denver’s premier fashion malls and retail areas, is located in Centennial. Alberta Development Partners has taken on the rebuilding and restoration of the old Southglenn Mall in order to encourage new-found growth within this city. The project will commence in 2006, and promises to feature a gourmet food market, big-box bookstore, new movie theater with stadium seating, charming cafes, and unique womens and mens apparel. The idea is to create the type of community gathering place with a "main street" type feel that will attract destination shoppers and Centennial’s residents as a place to go for not only daily errands, but for also special occasions. Energized and filled with shaded walkways and private spaces for relaxing, The Streets at Southglenn will be casually eclectic and activated with festivals, concerts and other community events.

Cherry Creek School District and Littleton Public Schools are the two school districts that not only serve this community, but also set some of the highest standards for public education in the Denver Area. Cherry Creek School District, with the reputation as one of the finest school districts around, has traditionally been recognized for their excellent elementary, middle and senior high schools. Cherry Creek High School claims a large percentage of the top test scores in Colorado each year and successfully propels over 93% of its graduates toward a college education. In 2004, five schools in the Littleton Public School district received the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award. Two schools within the system were included in Newsweek magazines list of the best schools in America. Student ACT and SAT scores within these two school systems rank well above the Colorado or National averages.
