Great Pumpkin
By Dennis Martin, Southwest Denver Suburbs Expert
Editor’s Note: In the last few years many residents of the Ken Caryl Ranch in Littleton, Colorado have stepped out their doors on mornings around this time to find that someone has quietly come in the night and left a pumpkin on their doorstep. Over the years this Halloween gift-giver has become known as the “Great Pumpkin.” Who is he? We asked a local little bird who wouldn’t chirp away the secret, but she did tell us this story. Can you guess who he is?
Yes, Virginia. The Great Pumpkin lives.
As a mater of fact, his place of permanent residence is right here at The Ken-Caryl Ranch in suburban Denver. And like his cousin, Santa Clause, he travels far outside his home territory to spread his goodwill.
He’s a very special being. The Great Pumpkin- and since you asked, I’d like to tell you a little bit about him. Not too much, you understand, for he’s a very private creature, and I’m certain no one has ever really seen him. No one but those special few who can see only what a child can-because they still allow themselves to Believe in wishes, dreams and… fairy tale endings!
And the people who get his gift every year are special people – because He knows that they still Believe in wishes, dreams and …fairy tale endings.
It’s all very real, you know. Just look out your door on that special mourning and see the evidence that The Great Pumpkin was indeed there and left his gift.
Who is He? You ask. Well, Virginia, “He” is a lot of things to a lot of people. You of course remember one of his most famous achievements when he changed from a mere pumpkin to the coach that took Cinderella to the ball. She was so happy that night, and The Great Pumpkin was too. That’s because The Great Pumpkin knows the best secret to happiness is making others happy.
Well, times changed after Cinderella, and The Great Pumpkin wanted to keep making people happy and have that special feeling one can only get that particular way. So He thought and He thought and then, in a flash — He got it. After his long period of seclusion He found the perfect solution.
Instead of taking all his energy and that of the fairy godmother to become One Great Huge Pumpkin – He would, once a year, spread little parts of himself all over to everyone and just appear on their doorsteps as a surprise.
He chose The Ken-Cary Ranch, because in the midst of a great huge smog-filled city, there was still at least one place where nature’s beauty reigned as a reminder of greater things and natural tranquility.
So The Great Pumpkin came to rest in this special place to share himself with special people and remind them that the greatest joy of all comes from giving a part of oneself to others.
You see, Virginia…He really is related to Santa Clause.
