Boulder Lights Exchange

Boulder's LED Christmas lights consume only 5% of normal power

Boulder, Colorado is certainly an innovative, creative and environmentally conscientious place to live.

Boulder has once again stepped up to its environmental image and drawn hundreds of residents to exchange their old holiday lights for LEDs.  That’s the more energy efficient light source for all Holiday lights.

The exchange occurred November 20 inside McGuckin’s Hardware.  I note inside because last year it was done on Pearl Street, outside, on one of our colder days. Still, the turnout was so amazing. 1800 strands were exchanged and they actually ran out of lights.

This year, folks were given a $7.00 coupon towards the purchase of a new strand. And, they could exchange up to 5 strands per person. They stayed warm and cozy and they had many styles and shapes of LEDs to choose from.  “Light-emitting diodes use only about 5% as much electricity as their light-bulb counterparts” according to Boulder’s own Office of Environmental Affairs.

That’s why staffers with that office  launched the first holiday light swap last year.   Last years exchange saved 30,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions.  Every little bit helps.

By the way you know that the lights surrounding the National Christmas Tree are now all LEDs! Total energy consumption there is now down to 2.5 watts.

These Holiday lights are all LED’s. They are not in Boulder but they look great. Thanks to Lauderdale Christmas Blog:

Who has time to put up all of those lights?? It sure is fun to watch, probably a lot more fun to watch than assemble. I’m glad some people have so much holiday spirit!

I wish they would have a similar program here. Our power rates have gone up every year for the last 7 years. They have started making LED fixtures for your home as well, but they haven’t caught on yet. They are more efficient than the CFL bulbs and they don’t contain any mercury.
